How to actually wash your hair properly (less often than you think)

Washing your hair sounds like the easiest thing in the world. Yet most people make the same three mistakes: water that's too hot, shampoo on the lengths instead of the scalp, and simply washing too often.

Start with lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water dries out your scalp and triggers more oil production, making your hair greasy faster.

Shampoo belongs on your scalp, not your lengths. Massage it in gently with your fingertips. The lather that runs down is enough for the rest of your hair.

Conditioner works the opposite way: it belongs on the lengths and ends, where your hair is driest, not on the scalp.

Rinse with cooler water than you started with. That closes the hair cuticle, which means more shine.

And how often? For most hair types, two to three times a week is plenty. Washing daily sounds clean, but it strips away the natural oils that keep your hair healthy.
